Cackl for Android — Support

Help, contact, and what to expect.

What Cackl is

Cackl is a push-to-talk group voice app. Hold the button, talk, and everyone in your group hears it — a walkie-talkie for a small, private group rather than a phone call. Messages are kept on your device so you can replay them, and you can see where members are on a map if they choose to share.

It is deliberately not a live call: it is message-based, so it tolerates a bad signal and a locked pocket rather than dropping.

Getting help

Email contact@inclineinstitute.com. We read it.

Please include your phone model and Android version, and roughly when the problem happened — for voice problems the timing matters more than the description, because it lets us line your report up against what the app recorded.

Getting started

  1. Install Cackl and open it.
  2. Enter the invite code you were sent. That's all you need — the code sets up your account and finds the right server for you. If someone sent you a link instead, tapping it fills the code in.
  3. Allow the microphone when asked. Without it the app cannot send anything.
  4. Open your group and hold the big button to talk. Let go when you're done.
  5. Optionally allow notifications so you're woken when a message arrives while the app is closed, and location if you want your group to see you on the map.

An invite code works once and expires after 24 hours. If yours has stopped working, ask whoever invited you to send a new one — they can cancel the old one and issue another.

Things to know

How Cackl works by design. These are not temporary gaps and they stay on this page whatever the release stage.

  • You must be invited. There is no public sign-up — groups are small and closed on purpose.
  • Uninstalling does not delete your account. It removes everything on the phone: your message history, your saved credential, and your cached copy of anyone's picture. Your identity and your group membership stay on our service until you ask us to remove them — email contact@inclineinstitute.com and we will.

Known limitations

Current as of August 7, 2026. Unlike the section above, these are expected to change:

  • Messages are kept per device. If you sign in on another device, your history does not follow you.

Common questions

Does it record when I'm not pressing the button? No. Audio is captured only while you hold the talk button. While you have a group screen open the microphone is held ready so that talking starts instantly, and what it hears is thrown away continuously.

One deliberate exception, because it's the kind of thing you'd rather hear from us than discover: a fraction of a second of audio from just before you press is kept and sent as the start of your message. That's what stops your first syllable being clipped — without it, "go left" arrives as "o left". It only ever goes to your own group, as the beginning of a message you chose to send.

Why does it show a permanent notification? So the app keeps hearing your group when the screen is off and the phone is in your pocket. Android requires a visible notification whenever an app does that — the notice is the system being honest with you. It stops when you leave the group screen.

Is there a smartwatch app? Yes, for Wear OS. It is a standalone app, not a screen for your phone: it signs in as its own member of your groups, connects to the service by itself, and works with your phone out of reach. It can talk, listen, show who is in a group, and show the group map. It asks for microphone and location permission separately on the watch, because they are that watch's own permissions.

Can I use a Bluetooth headset or a push-to-talk button? Yes. A connected headset's microphone is used automatically, and Bluetooth PTT buttons work, including with the screen off. If you hold two buttons at once, transmission stops only when you release the last one.

Why did my transmission cut off? There is a talk time limit (Home → menu → Talk time limit; 30 seconds to 2 minutes). It exists so a stuck button cannot hold your group's channel open indefinitely. Raise it if you routinely speak for longer.

Does it use a lot of battery or data? Voice is compressed heavily — a few kilobytes per second of speech. The largest battery cost is keeping the connection alive during a group session, which is why that stops when you leave the group screen.

Someone's name shows as "Member". That's a placeholder for someone we don't have a name for yet — usually a person who has been invited but hasn't redeemed their code, since the name is set when the invite is accepted. It resolves itself once they join.

Can I use a profile picture? Yes. Home → your name → tap your picture to choose a photo, then pan and zoom to frame it. It is cropped to a small square on your phone before it is sent, so the original photo never leaves your device. Other members of your groups see it next to your name and on the map. Remove it and you go back to your initials.

I tapped an invite link and nothing happened. If Cackl isn't installed yet, the link opens a web page instead of the app — and installing afterwards won't reopen it. Either tap the link again once the app is installed, or read the code off that page and type it in. Both work; the code is the same either way.
